Albany's Attractions

Shackelford County Courthouse
The Second Empire courthouse, completed in 1884, is the design of J. E. Flanders. It is unusual in its lack of extraneous ornamentation and in its proportion of window area to wall area. A dangerous electrical system and a gas space heater system created a risk of fire for this building. Water leaks from downspout and plumbing systems led to flooding of the interior, damaging historic finishes and county documents.

Williams was the architect that restored the Shackelford Courthouse. His company was selected in 1995 and funded by a federal/state transportation grant and local donations to work on the courthouse roof and clock tower. For the next six years, the Williams Company worked closely with the local government to create its Historic Courthouse Preservation Plan, which guided the project through a full interior and exterior restoration.

The Old Jail Art Center
Is based in a rural community with a population of 2,000.
Exhibitions and education programs serve a 25-county area which surrounds Albany. The OJAC's overall aim is to serve as an educational and cultural center focused on the visual arts through collections, exhibitions, interpretation, programs and regional history resources to enhance the education of our audience. The OJAC's yearly schedule includes four or five temporary exhibitions, rotation selections from the permanent collection, guided tours, public lectures, special events, a developed and active docent program, and ongoing art education programs for children, teenagers, and adults.

Today, as an accredited museum with a national membership of more than 700 and around 12,000 visitors per year, the OJAC is a thriving museum and plays an important role in the cultural activities of central West Texas.

Fort Griffin State Park
One of the best known of Texas' frontier installations, Fort Griffin State Historical Park in northeastern Shackleford County was first acquired as a Texas State Park in 1936 and was designated as a Texas State Historical Park in May of 1968.

Texas Longhorns
Texas was the original home of ranching and became the major blending pot for the evolution of the history-making Texas Longhorn breed of cattle. Longhorns are a great part of the history and the influence of Texas.
